Mum’s the word when differences set in

WHEN in trouble, blame mum. Resources Minister Matt Canavan has just joined a select list of people who have got into difficulties because of their mothers.

Here are some other famous cases of high-fliers who landed in trouble, allegedly because of maternal meddling.

★ SIR ELTON JOHN AND SHEILA FAIRBROTHER: Sir Elton fell out with his 92-year-old mother in 2008 after a disagreement over her friendships with his former staff members.

The 70-year-old Elton then failed to show up to his stepfather’s funeral in 2010.

Sheila furthered the feud by hiring an Elton John tribute act for her 90th birthday party.

But the pair have since reconciled after Elton spent time in intensive care with a bacterial infection in April after falling “violently ill” on a flight to the UK from Chile.

★ TORI AND CANDY SPELLING: Famed television producer Aaron Spelling adored his daughter Tori and the two remained inseparable until his death in 2006.

However Tori and her mum Candy have always had a testy relationship. Following the Spelling patriarch’s passing, they barely spoke and a bitter, public feud waged for several years.

A battle over the Spelling fortune ensued and it was widely reported that Tori was struggling financially while Candy lived it up in a 102-room mansion.

★ MATT CANAVAN: The 36-year-old MP Matt Canavan stepped down from his role as Turnbull Government Resources Minister this week after discovering his mum had signed him up for Italian citizenship.

“In 2006, my mother lodged documents with the Italian consulate in Brisbane to become an Italian citizen. In doing so, it would appear that she made an application for me to become an Italian citizen as well. I was 25 years old at the time,’’ he said.

“While I knew that my mother had become an Italian citizen I had no knowledge that I myself had become an Italian citizen.”
