Monto’s junior sports stars shine at carnival
ATHLETICS: Around 40 kids from Monto district schools took part in the North Burnett Athletics trials in Childers on Monday, having geared up with the District Athletics Carnival held at Monto State School on July 21.
Abercorn, Monto State, St Therese Catholic Primary School and Mulgildie State School all took part in track and field events, with the placing students getting to go to trials.
Monto State student Tara Staines, who competed in most of the events at trials, did exceptionally well at the district carnival.
Despite her age, the Year 6 student has worked hard for athletics events, training at least once every day except Friday.
The track and field events up for spots were the 100m and 200m sprint, 800m run, long jump, high jump, shot

put, discus, tetrathlon multi-event and 1500m trials held at a separate event last Thursday.
Tara qualified for every event trial except high jump.
“It’s pretty competitive and fun,” Tara said.
“Last year I got into everything except for high jump as well.”
It will be the last year Tara represents Monto State School in athletics.
But Tara’s mother and MSS teacher aide Karen Staines hopes there will be a good turnover of young athletes as the years go.
“They’re all competitive kids so let’s hope it keeps coming through,” she said.
“Monto the last couple of years had won the highest out of the North Burnett athletics day, so we can cross our fingers and hope it continues.”
Monto State School won overall with points, though Abercorn had the highest averages.
Acting Teaching Principal Kirsty Hay said engagement from the kids and support from parents was good.
“Everyone did very well, everyone participated and wanted to be involved and enjoy the day,” she said.
