GOLF: Monto Golf Club’s championship tournament was shaken up by a rainy final day.

In the end, club President Boyd Johnston was crowned the 2017 Club Champion after rounds of 72, 69, and 70 for a 1-over par for the 54 holes.

Johnston, who also won the overall nett for A-grade, was modest about his win.

“I think everyone had good rounds, it wasn’t just me,” he said.

“Last Sunday and this Sunday I had a couple of real good nines, and that’s what set it up for me.”

Johnston said it was nice to see the golf course get some rain, even if it was on the final day.

“The rain evened things up for me I suppose.”

Mathew Dahtler returned 239 to win B-grade by a significant margin with rounds of 75 and 78 over the weekend.

Dahtler shot clear ahead of the next highest competitor, George Augenstein Jnr, on the second day, which set him up to take the win.

“I played well yesterday, which probably put me ahead,” Dahtler said.

“The second round being wet was challenging, but I think it was that huge boost of confidence from how I played yesterday.”

C-grade came down to a two-way battle between Gerald Shultz and Warren Drahm, with Gerald the eventual winner.

Competitors in the C-grade competition initially faced stiff competition from Eddie Anderson, who pushed ahead on the second day, followed closely by Roy Marbach.

Unfortunately, Marbach and Anderson fell behind on the final day thanks to the rain.

This set Schultz and Drahm up for the race to the finish line.

Helen Irvine won the ladies division, beating out Leslie Irvine after they were neck-and-neck on day one.
