NDIS roll-out receives a welcome boost

PEOPLE with disabilities living in the Burnett, Gladstone and Rockhampton areas are set to be provided with improved access to services as the government continues to roll out the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

The Carers Queensland and Bushkids organisations will share in more than $23 million in funding to help deliver essential services across the region for people with disabilities and their families.

It is expected a number of service-provider staff will be based in the region to provide essential community services.

North Burnett Regional Council mayor Rachel Chambers met with Minister for Disability Services Coralee O’Rourke last week to discuss the roll-out of the scheme in the region.

“After speaking with Minister O’Rourke on Tuesday I am confident that we can be on the front foot when it comes to the NDIS roll-out in our region scheduled for June next year,” Cr Chambers said.

“I’m excited to help our community think outside the box when it comes to the NDIS delivery and certainly the minister is very supportive and understanding of the issues we face in the North Burnett.”

Flynn MP Ken O’Dowd labelled the scheme a great initiative and said he expects it to benefit the region.

“This is a vital program for the families and carers of our vast region,” he said.

“The program provides funding for community organisations to partner with the National Disability Insurance Agency to deliver the NDIS in regional areas like ours.”
