Alias Grace is the story of Grace Marks (Sarah Gadon, pictured), a poor, young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Canada. Grace, along with stable hand James McDermott (Kerr Logan), was convicted of the brutal murders of their employer, Thomas Kinnear, and his housekeeper Nancy Montgomery in 1843. James was hanged while Grace was sentenced to life imprisonment. The Netflix series, available now, shows how she went on to become one of the most notorious women of 1840s Canada for her alleged role in the murder. Grace’s conviction was controversial, and sparked much debate about whether she was actually involved, or merely an unwitting accessory.
