Nominations open for cricket classic
CRICKET: Nominations are now open for the 2018 edition of the Mungungo v The World seven-a-side charity cricket day.
The much-loved event was created by local cricketers who wanted to lift the community’s spirits and raise money after floods.
More than $5000 in prizes will beup for grabs in a multi-draw raffle, including a Sunshine Coast holiday and 1770 Larc adventure.
Last year nearly $8000 was raised, an effort organisers hope to match when the event is held at the one and only MCG – Mungungo Cricket Ground – in September
The proceeds will be split between RACQ LifeFlight, Ridgehaven Retirement Complex and Angel Flight, charities near and dear to the organisers’ heart.
Publican and president of Mungungo Sports and Recreation, Steve Alford, said was a great day out for a worthy cause.
“It’s a family fun day. There will be food and drinks on and we’ll have a jumping castle for the kids,” Alford said.
“The charities are vital services for our area and a number of people we know use them.”
Matches are played with seven-over innings, the shortened format ensuring a fast, exciting and inclusive day’s cricket.
Up to 10 seven-a-side teams will compete for top honours, each player getting to bat and bowl for one over in each game they play.
Organiser Vicki Mackay said there was no time for mucking around when it came to getting a team sorted because it was first in, best dressed.
“We have teams from Moura, Boyne Valley and Gympie and we’ve advertised in Bundaberg and Gladstone,” Mackay said.
“It has been growing every year so we had to cap it at 10 teams or else it would blow out to a two-day event.”
The pub will host an after party with a pig on the spit and a talent show for live entertainment.
“We have some very talented local artists and we’d like to invite them to come along on the night,” Mackay said. An entry fee of $5 per player applies.
