Officer to boost ag jobs

Central and North Rural Weekly - - COLUMN - DAVID THOMSON Growcom CEO

AGRICULTURE can be a volatile industry, with seasonal changes highly influencing workforce needs, and it can be an uphill battle trying to promote its benefits to jobseekers.

That’s why Growcom supports the work of the Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network to address gaps in workforces across horticulture in regional and rural communities.

As a proud supporter of QAWN, Growcom welcomes the appointment of a new agriculture workforce officer for Southeast Queensland, Craig Dillon, who will play a vital role in matching the right farm workers to the right jobs in the region.

Mr Dillon will be working with growers across Southeast Queensland to alleviate any stress they may have when trying to source new staff members, whether it be skilled or unskilled.

He has extensive experience in the recruitment sector and has worked with farmers on and off for more than a decade.

He has forged positive relationships with a lot of the small crop farms around Caboolture, helping them to

source staff and meet their labour needs.

He has also worked with the Australian Government’s JobActive program and provided labour hire for mining companies through his own recruitment business.

A fitter and turner by trade, having long left his tools behind him, Mr Dillon is enthusiastic to take what he’s learnt in recruitment and apply it to agriculture.

His humble beginnings, from a little farming country town on the Murray, have put him in the perfect position to understand farmers and where they come from.

Mr Dillon begins his role as Southeast Queensland’s agriculture workforce officer in October.

QAWN is an industry-led rural jobs initiative funded by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Growcom works closely with QAWN to increase awareness of agriculture as a viable career pathway and promote the importance of a sustainable workforce.
