Storey shaping up for great grand final
WHEN you are on a roll, everything just seems to fall into place.
For one of Mackay’s favourite sons, Ryan Storey, regarded as one of PBR’s ‘veterans’ the journey to this year’s PBR grand finals is ticking along nicely.
Storey made another big move on the Australian standings with his second consecutive win last weekend at the Monster Energy PBR Rockhampton Invitational.
In round one, 2016 Australian champion Cody Heffernan showed the enthusiastic crowd what an 86-point ride looks like.
He was picture perfect on a good bull from Dunne’s pen called Jackie Who.
Kurt Shephard was next in line aboard Iron Jacket (Wallace Bucking Bulls) with a score of 85 – only half a point in front of Ryan Storey on Curran’s Disco Duck.
In total, nine riders made a qualified ride in the first round and the stage was set for a tough second round to determine the event winner.
Tough it proved to be. Aaron Kleier took on King Kong and it looked like the standings leader was about to add more points to his tally. However, on judge’s review he came up just short – 7.97 seconds.
Others came close but it was up to the veterans to show the young guns just what it takes. Jason Mara topped the round with an 85 on BK Bucking Bulls’ Firecracker. Storey backed up on Wallace’s Super Natural for 84. At the end of the night he was the only cowboy to make two qualified rides and earned himself another champion’s buckle.
“The support of a good woman” was Ryan’s sincere reply when asked by announcer Warren Matotek to what he attributed his great form. That good woman is his wife Rebecca, who along with their three young children, doesn’t quite get to all the PBR events but is sure to be cheering in the stands at the PBR grand finals in Townsville on November 23–24.
Storey jumped from number 13 to number 7 in the Australian standings following his win.
With only three events before the grand finals, the 2018 Australian title race is heating up.
Next stop: Beaudesert on Saturday, October 6, followed by Dubbo, October 20, Tamworth, November 17, and then on to Townsville.
Tickets are selling fast for all remaining PBR events so to avoid missing out, book your seats at www.pbraustralia.com.au.
FAMILY MAN: Father-of-three Ryan Storey said he wouldn’t be where he is now if it wasn’t for his wife, Rebecca’s, support.
