Lucas Divino keen to make his mark during three-month stay in Australia

Central Queensland News - - RURAL WEEKLY -

LUCAS Divino flew into Brisbane last Thursday and then drove up to Mackay for his first ever Australian PBR event.

Ranked number two in Brazil, Lucas has been looking forward to his trip Down Under.

The well mannered 23 year old is already falling in love with our beautiful country and is looking forward to his three-month stay.

At the Mackay PBR he marked an 80 on Dunnes Jungle Thunder, which was not enough points to get him to the championship round but was a good start.

Lucas is from a ranching family and enjoys team roping, so from Mackay it was off to Townsville for the week where he has taken a little time out to head to the roping pen with well known PBR identity Clint “Wombles” Dolan.

From there he will head to Innisfail for the event this weekend at Callendar Park where he has drawn Brandenburg’s Bar None in the first section.

From there he will be hoping to go one better than last week and make the top 10 for the championship round where the line up of bulls is exceptional. It includes SweetPro’s Fully Locked and Loaded that carried Fraser Babbington to the win last weekend in Mackay with a score of 89.5 points.

However the event that Lucas is really looking forward to competing in is Townsville’s Iron Cowboy on November 17–18 at the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre.

Alongside Lucas will be fellow Brazilian Junior Qaresna warming up their ropes for this event which many regard as home to the PBR in Australia.

In 1999 the PBR first delivered an event to Townsville. 18 consecutive years later and the event itself has put more than a million dollars into the Wrangler pockets of cowboys with more than 150,000 spectators witnessing more than 1600 bulls buck out in what is considered one of the most intimate bull riding venue experiences in the nation.

The positive economic on-flow affects to the Townsville and broader community have been substantial since its inception and will continue to do so as it moves towards its 20th anniversary celebration in 2019.

PBR general manager Glen Young said Townsville is and always will be a very special tour stop for the PBR.

“I’ve been involved with this event since day one and I’m a local, so it is important that this event stands alone among all other competitions to satisfy long-term fans, attract new fans, and most importantly ensure it is a historic event to win for the athletes who compete in it,” he said.

“Our normal cup series format consists of the top 22 athletes all competing on two bulls, with the top eight progressing to a 3rd bull in the championship round to determine the winner.

“Three bulls in one night, or one weekend for that matter, at this level of competition is gruelling enough.

“With Iron Cowboy, we have added an additional two rounds of competition that will now see the athletes competing on four bulls each and the top eight progressing to a 5th bull in the finale.

“Last year riders could progress on times if they didn’t make a score. This time around we have reverted to the most identifiable aspect of bull riding – the eight-second ride.”

In 2016, a record attendance of fans cheered on through the night until there was one cowboy left, Troy Wilkinson, who went on to win the National Champion Title in July 2017.

“The Iron Cowboy is like no other event. It tests your endurance, state of mind and the pain and stress your body can withstand,” he said.
