Garden triumph for the Speeds
Brigodoon hosts first garden meeting
THE first Leichhardt Garden Club meeting was held last week in the garden of Bill and Gretchen Speed at their home, Brigodoon.
Visitors were taken aback by the lushness of the garden in this demanding summer. Garden club member Deidre Jounquay said the lawn was simply outstanding.
“Gretchen takes a relaxed approach to her gardening with many garden beds full of hardy and well-proven stayers interweaving around the house and sweeping out to a magnificent view of a dam full of wildlife,” Mrs Jounquay said.
“Two large ceramic pots with pink mandevillas flowering to perfection dominated the patio area. Gretchen had mass planted zinnias everywhere and these were also putting on a lovely display.”
Janice Edmonds, accompanied by her husband, Tom, were the guest speakers and they spoke on the care of succulents. Janice brought along many plants propagated from her own garden. After lunch, Janice demonstrated how to build a terrarium as another dimension to gardening with succulents.
The next garden day will be on Wednesday, April 5, in the garden of John and Mary Atkins at Spion Kop, Taroom. Julie Murray from Moorlands Bush Nursery, Roma, will be the guest speaker.
Battlers ready for Lindsay Williams
THE Taroom Wandoan Battlers had their final training session yesterday in preparation for the annual Lindsay Williams Shield being played tomorrow at Wandoan.
The Battlers will take on the Tara Panthers at 4pm, while the Jandowae Fishhooks will play Roma Cities immediately afterwards. The winners from the two games will then meet in the final where they will play for the Lindsay Williams Shield.
If you can’t make the action in Wandoan, make sure you like the Taroom Wandoan Battlers Facebook page for live updates throughout the evening.
