$10K raised in UGLY fashion
Kerry’s bid in bartender comp a huge success
IN LESS than three months, Kerry McAuliffe managed to raise more than $10,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Kerry took part in the UGLY Bartender of the Year competition for the second year in a row through her job at the Biloela Top Pub Commercial Hotel.
To raise the money, Kerry held a series of events.
“I had the bowls day, golf day and shave plus had auction and raffles,” Kerry said.
“I chose those events because who doesn’t love a game of bowls on a Sunday and the golf day, I love golf.”
Each event was a success, with the golf day alone raising more than $2000.
“For both days we had a good turnout,” Kerry said.
The big finale was held last Friday night, with an auction, raffles and Jason Williams and Debbie Peter shaving their heads.
“I really didn’t know if I was going to have anyone to do the shave, Jason Williams was going to do it if I made the $10,000 but then I had Debbie approach me Thursday to ask could she shave as she has just had someone close to her diagnosed with blood cancer,” Kerry said.
“It meant a lot that Debbie chose to shave her head, not only was she supporting a loved one but also me with the fundraising. So proud of her.”
The final event helped Kerry crack the $10K mark.
“Last year we raised $9013 and this year I was determined to make $10,000 and we raised $10,694,” Kerry said.
“I wasn’t sure I was going to make my goal and up to Thursday I had about $8200 banked, I knew I had to push it.”
Kerry was blown away by the generosity she received from the town and hotel patrons.
“I thought I would have a good response again, just not this big,” she said.
“I am truly overwhelmed with the generosity of this town.”
It wasn’t just the monetary factor that blew Kerry away, it was the community support.
“Everyone was so supportive,” she said.
“They all said what a great thing I was doing for a good cause.”
UGLY Bartender raises money for the Leukaemia Foundation and each $80 raised provides one night’s free accommodation for someone with blood cancer and their carer.
“I was inspired by a friend’s daughter’s post on Facebook, her mum lost the battle last year,” Kerry said.
