Expert has faith in CQ
EXPERIENCED presenter and renowned economist Dr Keith Suter is confident in the future of Gladstone and central Queensland, which he calls a “go ahead area”.
Dr Suter, the emcee at Gladstone Engineering Alliance’s Major Industry Conference, said Gladstone’s variety of industries made it well-placed for a strong future.
Dr Suter commended Gladstone’s Port, adding its access to countries within the Pacific Ocean made the region squarely in the forefront to global economy growth.
He said countries to watch were China, India and Vietnam.
“These areas are all significant in terms of growth and opportunities and Gladstone is in the right place at the right time,” he said.
“It’s such a go-ahead area, even though there’s the ups and downs in the resource sector.”
But he said it was important for the region to diversify further in renewable energy and in the service sector, in particular aged care.
The award-winning presenter, renowned for explaining complex global and business issues in a way his audiences can digest and understand, said he would focus on three topics during the Gladstone conference.
Dr Suter said he would emphasise the importance of the resources sector.
“It tends to go up and down, but overall world demand for resources will continue,” he said.
“Secondly we need to look as a country for alternative ways to stimulate the economy, that’s why tourism, health care and aged care appeals to me.
“If Gladstone becomes a good place for retirement and aged care, that’s labour intensive and that creates jobs.”
His take-home point for the conference audience is to take pride in Australia’s economy.
“I teach at the Sydney campus of Boston University and the Americans are very impressed with what Australia has,” he said.
“Generally we look at America as having a robust economy but their recovery rate is not nearly as healthy from the Global Financial Crisis than Australia’s.
“We shouldn’t talk down Australia’s economy and the Australian way of life.”
