A local syndicate is still celebrating their big win at this year’s Thangool Cup.

Before a large crowd, Don’t We Love It prevailed in a close photo finish in the 2018 running of the Eric and Val Nobbs Memorial Thangool Cup.

It was the first time in many years the cup was won by local owners.

To add to the celebrations for the Nobbs family, Eric and Val’s son Stuart and grandson Tom were part of the winning syndicate, along with representatives of the Howard, Brosnan, Oates, Maynard, Rann, Moller, Dunne and Maguire families.

Ridden by David Simmons and trained by Johnny O’Sing, Don’t We Love It won the race by three inches.

“It was a tight race,” Mark Moller, who was part of the winning syndicate, said.

“It was the first time locals have won the Thangool Cup for a while. It was good that the cup was finally taken home by locals.

“We haven’t won a Melbourne Cup but it would be a similar feeling. Everyone was very excited.

“We had a big party that night.”

According to Moller, “everyone at the races were saying how lovely it was to have a group of locals win the Thangool Cup”.

“We all knew Eric and Val Nobbs so well,” he said.

“Eric and Val Nobbs have been huge supporters of the Thangool Race Club. A lot of people who were involved in the club were involved in the horse and it meant a lot to win their cup.”

Moller said Don’t We Love It was bought with the race in mind and named because everyone involved loved horse racing.

“All people involved really love horse racing and the horse is named Don’t We Love It, so very appropriate name,” he said.

“It was good to have a plan come together.”

Don’t We Love It has gone for a short spell and will be set for a tilt at a provincial series race in Brisbane over Christmas. PHOTOS: CONTRIBUTED
