McLaren Vale sparkling shiraz creates history
THE first trophy ever awarded for a Sparking Red in the 31-year history of the International Wine Challenge (IWC) has gone to McLaren Vale III Associates for its Sparkling Squid Ink Shiraz.
The wine is a blend of vintages made by winemaker Brian Light – a previous Australasian Winemaker of the Year, and three times winner of McLaren Vale Wine Show’s top Bushing King award.
The Sparkling Squid Ink was also the only wine to win a Gold Medal in the IWC Sparkling Red category.
Announcing the medal in London, this year’s IWC judging panel – Tim Atkin MW, Oz Clarke, Sam Harrop MW, Peter McCombie MW and Charles Metcalfe – described the Sparkling Squid Ink as “sheer class”. The judges notes: “Violet hue; bitter chocolate and blackberry aromas, clean, bright black cherry fruit and crisp. Wonderful vibrant black forest gateaux flavours, with the tang of raspberry vinegar. Bright, lightly defined finish. Sheer class.”
Winemaker Brian Light said the win was very exciting for the III Associates team.
“It’s a great result for this unique Aussie style and it’s great for McLaren Vale, up against wines from all over the world,” Brian said.
“The complexity of this McLaren Vale Shiraz sparkling wine is matched by the balance of ripe plum pudding flavours and soft mouth-filling tannins – we believe it’s a beautiful drink and we’re very pleased others are agreeing!”
The Sparkling Squid Ink has been a hit with reviewers in Australia and internationally since its release last November and, earlier this year, won a silver medal at the Wine Spirits Asia Wine Challenge in Singapore.
