Wandoan Wildcats all cashed up after scoring sweet $5000

THE Wandoan Wildcats Junior Rugby League Club have been successful in winning the $5000 runner-up prize in the Suncorp Cash Up Your Club competition.

The club’s 2016 treasurer, Mandy Hay, submitted an application for the competition and it was a fantastic surprise when the club was announced runner-up.

As part of the promotion the club received a special visit from former Brisbane Bronco and Queenslander, Corey Parker and representatives from QRL and Suncorp last Wednesday.

Corey took the time to meet and play with the juniors and signed anything from posters, to football cards, jerseys and football boots. It was a great afternoon with Corey fascinated by the strong club culture in a small community and the commitment and dedication parents and volunteers make to the development of grass roots rugby league.

He also acknowledged the distances travelled by the club to attend training and weekend games. Which was the main focus of the application submitted on behalf of the club to help alleviate travelling costs.

A total of 342 junior clubs were nominated for the major prize of $10,000 and two runner-up prizes of $5000 each. Entrants listed their club and nominated what club projects the money would be used for. Given that there are only 439 junior clubs in Queensland, to say the response was strong doesn’t quite cover it.
