Bears heading to TFL grand final
FOOTBALL: The Chinchilla Bears men’s side has qualified for the 2017 Toowoomba Football League championship grand final after registering a victory against second-placed Willowburn last Sunday.
Both teams had registered a win in their previous meetings with each other and it was always going to be a tough encounter.
The Bears were the first to score in the fifth minute when a free kick was awarded to the Bears.
James Cardillo was on the end of the free kick from Dan Harmon to put it in the back of the net.
The Willowburn goalkeeper was called upon to make many saves in the opening 20 minutes.
The Bears scored a second goal through Ross Cardillo from a corner to take a 2–0 lead after 22 minutes.
The Bears created some more chances in the first half but did not score.
The Bears’ defence had the upper hand in most situations with Jonty Calleja, Matt Hoffmann, Sean Bowman and Dan Harmon holding steady throughout the half.
The second half started with Willowburn keen to chip away at the deficit and the game picked up pace.
Time was running out for Willowburn and they started to push forward in numbers to find those game-saving goals, but this left their defence exposed when the Bears turned defence into attack.
Chinchilla was able to hold the lead until full-time.
The Bears now face the winner of the preliminary final between Willowburn and Garden City.
FINAL BOUND: The Chinchilla Bears are through to the TFL championship grand final.
VICTORY: The Bears defeated Willowburn in the major semi-final, 2–0.
