Terraced garden delights

GREY skies did not dampen the spirits of the Leichhardt Garden Club members as they visited the garden of Cameron and Christie McLennan, Richon, Taroom, for their October gathering.

The Richon house has been well positioned on top of a hill with spectacular 360-degree panoramic views. The terraced gardens extend around the extremities with numerous well-placed steps leading from one level to the next. Cameron and Christie have only recently moved to Richon, so the garden is in the early stages of development but radiates creativity and potential.

Ground covers and hardy plants fill each garden bed on each level. Christie also has a number of roses dotted throughout the escarpments, and supplemented with oddities such as a barbed wire hat, adding interest to all aspects in this easy-care garden.

This month was a little different in that there was a plethora of speakers covering a diverse range of topics with Adam Clark talking on vegetables and gardening with the moon, Ineke Hay talking on the planting and care of fruit trees, and also Sue Presho talking about how to garden using hay bales, primarily vegetable growing.

All presenters were engaging and helpful while giving commonsense ideas and suggestions. Garden Club members were asked to bring along a flower for a small display. A rose from the garden of Tracee Hay, president of the club, was given the blue ribbon. Competition was very close.

The next meeting of the Leichhardt Garden Club will be held in the garden of Trent and Anna Radel, Sandstone Park, Taroom. As this will be the Christmas break-up, there will be a shared lunch as well as the traditional cutting of the Christmas cake. Guest speaker will be Brian Sams, a well-known horticulturist from Toowoomba.

This day not to be missed is on Wednesday, November 8, commencing at 10.30 am. Remember to bring a chair, hat, lunch and a friend.
