Starry night dinner at Big Skies

Chinchilla News - - NEWS -

NOTHING beats dinner cooked on a bed of hot coals under a night sky filled with stars, especially when a professional is doing the cooking.

Guests at the inaugural Big Skies Festival 2018 will be treated to dinner with a difference on Thursday and Friday, May 3–4, in the grounds of the stunning Jimbour House.

The Camp Oven Experience will delight visitors and locals with cuisine prepared in traditional cast-iron camp ovens over a coal fire.

Michael Patch, who will dish up the Big Skies camp oven fare, said the evenings were a great chance for people to take a seat under the stars and see first-hand how a camp oven was prepared.

“It’s a really family friendly event and it’s great for people to see us preparing coals for the cooking fire and see this iconic Aussie bush way of cooking,” he said.

“We have a really hearty menu across the two nights, which includes roast pork; roast beef and vegetables; beef stew; beef curry and rice and, of course, some delicious desserts of sticky date pudding and boiled plum pudding with custard.”

Seating is provided for camp oven guests, and bookings are essential.

Western Downs Regional Council spokesman for Economic Development Councillor Donna Ashurst said the chance to camp out at Jimbour Station and see the homestead play host was an opportunity not to be missed.

“It really is incredible out here on the grounds of Jimbour House, it’s one of the true historical mansions of the colonial days, and it draws people from all over the country to experience it,” she said.

“Camping out under the open, starry skies of the Western Downs and eating dinner cooked over the campfire isn’t a memory you’ll forget in a hurry.”

“There’s something special about winding down and taking time out to stop and enjoy the moment.”

Big Skies Festival offers camping at Jimbour Station for up to 10 nights, allowing visitors take their time exploring the local region and soaking up the atmosphere of Big Skies country.

Caravan and tent sites will be available to accommodate both short and long term camping, with plenty of activities and attractions around the festival and the local region to keep everyone entertained.
