FOR many of us, our families just don’t feel quite complete without, at least, one four-footed member.

Unfortunately, there are always plenty of them waiting for a family.

That’s what the Pound Pets initiative is all about, and the Chinchilla News was thrilled to learn a number of the pets we’ve featured in recent weeks have found their furever homes.

Two weeks ago we featured a pint-sized pup, now named Coco, who garnered more than 5500 views on Facebook.

We sat down with her new family to hear about how they found, and fell in love, with their playful new companion.

Mum Kristy Lewis said she hadn’t intended on getting a dog, after having big dogs in the past that jumped up at her youngest daughter.

“But this one popped up on Facebook and she just looked so sweet,” Miss Lewis said.

“There was another couple looking at her beforehand so I gave up, and then Shane (animal control officer) rang me back later on, and I went out and had a look at her and she was just so sad and so excited that someone was out there to look at her, so decided ‘yep, she was the one’.

“She was just perfect.” In February this year Western Downs Regional Council introduced free desexing up until the end of April for all cats and dogs adopted, a program Miss Lewis described as “amazing”.

“You can take them home and you know there’s no chance of puppies coming along,” she said.

“It’s a big expense for families that have to put out for desexing so what they’ve done is really good.”

For the Miss Lewis and her children Chloe, Blake, and Alyssa, Coco is already part of the family.

“She just fits in so well with the kids, she prefers the kids over me most days, but still trying to get her used to the cats,” Miss Lewis said.

“They’re getting closer and closer every day.”

For Chloe, welcoming Coco has been incredibly special.

“I’m more of a dog person,” she said.

She said she’s happy to be able to give animals a home if they don’t have one.
