Cheshunt (UK)

Classic Ford - - TOP TWENTY -

When Ford decided to put the new twin-cam engined Lotus Cortina on sale in 1963, Lotus was hired to manufacture all the road cars. The Lotus factory, in Cheshunt (northeast London — just off the A10 road) was cramped, so assembly was in a first-floor workshop (remote from Elan assembly), starting from bare bodyshells supplied by Ford from Dagenham, while engines came from the JAP company. Several thousand such cars were produced, but there were quality control issues, so the experiment was not repeated.
