Rumbling bearings mean the Type E ‘box has advanced wear, but you’re more likely to have an issue with the differential failing — whining being the obvious telltale that it’s failing — or the two-piece propshaft’s universal joint and rubber coupling breaking down, the symptoms being a knocking noise and vibration. Be sure to check that the RS’s unique alloy bellhousing is in place.
