Classic Ford - - HERITAGE -

In true Ford chaotic historic record-keeping form, the number of RS2000s built between its launch in June (or perhaps July 1973) is up for debate.Although the RS project was more a marketing plan than a serious rally venture, it’s usually thought that only about just over the 5000 needed for homologation were built at the AVO factory at Aveley before it closed in December 1974. Others claim the figure was as low as 3500 units (well short of homologation rules) and another rumour is that 1000 or so cars were actually put together in Saarlouis, Germany. Whatever the truth, one other fact that seems unbelievable looking back from the heady prices that all Mk1 Escorts fetch today… a Mk1 RS2000 cost just £200 more than a Mexico at the RS’s launch… but another £200 on top of that would get you an RS1600… Isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing?
