Q: I’ve been told that the engine in the (admittedly rare) V8-engined version of the Volvo S80 is a Volvo design but surely it’s really a Ford unit? I’m tempted by the stealth appeal of a 4x4 V8-powered Volvo saloon and if it’s a common Ford engine then I reckon it would be cheap to maintain.

A: it’s almost unbelievable but the B8444S was a Volvo/Yamaha development and made by Yamaha. It was used in the XC90 and S80 but nothing else! Don’t let that put you off though: it’s a reliable unit.
