Opening dates up in the air

Cockburn Gazette - - NEWS - Bryce Luff

AN opening date for the Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Centre (ARC) remains unconfirmed, but the Aubin Grove train station remains on track to launch as scheduled.

Eight weeks ago it was revealed the public would have to wait until at least April to use the $109 million ARC, built at Cockburn Central West.

While there has been no date locked in, Cockburn recreation and community safety manager Rob Avard said the opening should be in May.

“Both the official opening of the building and opening to the public will be held toward the end of May,” he said.

“The actual date of opening needs to be agreed with the Commonwealth Government, which contributed funds towards the project.”

The City of Cockburn secured $10 million for the project from the Federal Government’s Regional Development Australia Fund.

“The facility will be open with all works completed and facilities available,” Mr Avard said.

“The building works are substantially complete, with some external works to be finished off.

“Currently, furniture and equipment are being installed and staff are being trained in the operation of the complex equipment required to operate the facility.”

Across town, the Aubin Grove station is on schedule to open in April. Former Jandakot MLA Joe Francis said in January the station, constructed on the Mandurah line about 3.5km south of Cockburn Central, would open on April 23.

Despite a change of government after the March 11 State Election, the Public Transport Authority (PTA) is confident the station launch will not change.

“Aubin Grove Station will open to the public on April 23,” a PTA spokeswoman said.
