FOUR authors plus four adored children’s stories equals one newly released Fremantle Press book that is very hard to put down.

Cyclones and Shadows is a collection of four of the most popular Waarda series tales from writers Darlene Oxenham, Pat Dudgeon and Pat’s nieces Laura Dudgeon and Sabrina Dudgeon-Swift, all brought together under one cover.

The Dudgeons’ much-loved character Lilli and her companion Shadow star in two of the stories, proving a good friendship always goes both ways, while strong-willed Annie’s adventure is told in the second two stories, delving into the importance of family ties and of having a little bit of ingenuity.

Fremantle’s Dudgeon-Swift said she loved writing the story Lilli and Shadow in Trouble with her sister and being able to collaborate had made for a different writing experience.

“It’s very different and in fact can be a lot more enjoyable I think as there are more ideas and storylines being shared across the table,” she said.

“A lot of brainstorming between us happened and we all were able to bounce ideas off each other.

“It was a lot easier to be inspired by the excitement and passion of each other, especially when we got stuck with which direction the story would go.”

Oxenham said both of Annie’s stories in Cyclones and Shadows had been inspired by childhood memories.

“The Beach Sports Car is based on a beat-up faded pink Volkswagen that we actually did own and which my father had transformed so we could we drive it along the beach,” she said.

“We often used the car to go down on to the beach to collect shells. My father would drive the car along the beach and we would look out for the tell-tale sign of a small air hole in the sand, which signalled that a baler shell was beneath the sand.

“In both of my stories I also included my beloved dog Patches as he was an important part of my life at the time.”
