State of Origin nod for women

Cockburn Gazette - - SPORT -

FREMANTLE, South Fremantle and East Fremantle female football players have made their mark on this year’s inaugural AFLW season, so much so that they have been selected to play in next month’s AFLW State of Origin game.

Fremantle captain Kara Donnellan is the sole Docker to make the Victorian side, but the Allies team has plenty of local players.

Donnellan will have to play against fellow Dockers Kirby Bentley, Dana Hooker and Ebony Antonio, while three players originally from East Fremantle and South Fremantle have also made the Allies team.

AFL head of female football Josh Vanderloo said it would be an entertaining game, showcasing the best female footballers from the AFLW competition.

“The State of Origin match provides a great opportunity for us to be creative about how we showcase the best female players in the country,” he said.

The game will be played at Etihad Stadium on September 2 and will be broadcast on free-to-air TV.
