Cockburn Gazette - - FRONT PAGE -

POLICE Minister Michelle Roberts joined police and community groups in Fremantle on Wednesday to launch this year’s Leavers Strategy.

About 8000 leavers are expected to flock to hotspots, including Rottnest, Busselton and Dunsborough as they celebrate the end of school.

The strategy, designed to help school leavers stay safe and behave responsibly, involved 12 months of planning between government and non-government agencies and ensures school leavers are supported with activities and entertainment.

It also includes designated leavers entertainment zones in Dunsborough and Rottnest to provide them with a safe and positive environment.

Ms Roberts congratulated students for working hard saying it was now time to unwind, relax and celebrate their achievements.

“Police, along with hundreds of volunteers are working hard to provide a safe and positive environment, but we want you to look after yourselves and your friends, be respectful and behave appropriately,” she said.

“I encourage parents to have a talk with their children and encourage them to stay safe and keep an eye on their friends.

“I also want to remind people to be safe on the roads.

“Don’t drink and drive, please slow down, drive to the conditions and don’t get distracted.”

Additional police will also be sent to Rottnest and the South-West before, during and after the official leavers period to maximise the safety and security of school leavers.

Leavers celebrations will be held from Monday, November 20 until Thursday, November 23.
