Calico bags in East Fremantle

Cockburn Gazette - - FRONT PAGE -

EAST Fremantle residents will receive a surprise gift in their mailbox delivered by members of the East Fremantle Junior Football Club, with a calico bag to be given to every household.

East Fremantle Mayor Jim O’Neill said the idea first came about in 2004 but came together when the Town created its new corporate logo.

“We were looking at ways to promote the Town and it coincided with council’s proposed local law to ban single use plastic bags in 2016-17,” he said.

“We are providing bags to highlight the proposed ban and encourage residents to be prepared and to use alternatives.”

About 3200 residents will receive the bag and any bags left over may be used at future community events as giveaways.

The Town building is reducing its waste with all general waste bins removed from work stations, leaving only paper recycling bins without plastic liners.
