Singular success

Cockburn Gazette - - FRONT PAGE - Belinda Cipriano

TALENT runs in the family for Success mother and daughter Tammy Roberts and Jourdyn Spinley.

The duo, who recently competed in the Miss Galaxy and Ms Galaxy pageants, saw Miss Spinley finish runner-up in the Miss Category, while Ms Roberts took out the title of Ms Galaxy, the newest category in the competition.

Ms Roberts, who will go to Florida next month for the international competition, said she decided to enter the pageant with her daughter, who was taking part for the third time, to show her it was important to never give up.

“This was my first-ever pageant and the pageant’s first year with the Ms division (over 28 and unmarried) in Australia,” she said.

“I decided to enter alongside Jourdyn in her third attempt to show her not to give up and prove to myself that I can still be a good mum and pursue my dreams too.”

Ms Roberts said she liked the pageant because it was all about giving back to the community and volunteering .

“We were also required to raise funds for the Make a Wish charity. Like most people I thought pageants were all about beautiful people and being judged solely on that,” she said.

“I have seen first-hand how the girls have bonded and formed lifelong friendships, becoming role models to others, and I have watched my daughter host and organise events, volunteer her time while her friends would be out having fun, learn how to be confident in public speaking and become a better version of herself.”

Ms Roberts said she had her eyes set on the international crown but hoped to empower women and single mothers.

“It’s OK to be a good mum and go after your dreams,” she said.
