“Of course, any of the creative industries are a nightmare, and it’s not helped by the fact that a major driving force in the creative process is the spur of self-doubt, to do better, to be better. But to be better you have to accept that the work is never good enough, which is not great for a sense of self-esteem.”

“The sacrifices [in my work] come from being freelance, the unplannable workflow that necessitates making hay as and when the sun shines. The inevitable casualties are friends and family, the missed birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and the countless missed dinners and parties. But the rewards are huge; I get to do something I love, with new challenges every day, and that hopefully makes me a better person to be around when I am there. I have an incredibly understanding wife, and a dog who remembers me occasionally.”

“There are all sorts of challenges on a shoot, some of them technical, and the answer to that is simply that you need to know your sh*t. And the other is about creating a bubble of trust around you and your subject, so that the magic of collaboration can happen. The end result has something that belongs neither to you or your sitter, but both of you, and is hopefully greater than the sum of its parts.”
