Nu­mer­ous char­ac­ters who look like su­per­heroes ac­tu­ally op­er­ate more like se­cret agents – what else is Cap, while work­ing for SHIELD? – but only one group were de­signed this way from the off: Tower Comics’ THUN­DER Agents of the mid-’60s, three su­per­heroes pre­sented as ev­ery­day Joes with a day job that just hap­pened to in­volve spy­ing for The Higher United Na­tions De­fence En­force­ment Re­serves. The three ini­tial su­per-agents – Dy­namo, No­Man and Men­thor – are aided by the non-pow­ered THUN­DER Squad, in ac­tion against vil­lains like SPI­DER (Se­cret People’s In­ter­na­tional Direc­torate for Ex­trale­gal Rev­enue, be­lieve it or not). Within the first 10 is­sues a hero would die and a num­ber of new su­per-agents ar­rive; there have been a half dozen re­vivals over the years, and from as many pub­lish­ers…
