Comic Heroes - - Contents -

From heroic sacrifice to out-of-nowhere betrayal, from game-changing new concepts to shameless tearjerkers, comics revel in “Did-you- seethat?!” shock moments. Matt Bielby talks you through our favourites

The comic book universe heaves with shock moments, of course: the unexpected return of a villain, the betrayal of a friend, the this-can’t-be-happening death of a much-loved character – but most comics go out of their way to make sure that nothing really happens too. (After all, how can Peter Parker remain a hard-luck everyman when he’s married to a supermodel? He can’t, and periodically all such blind alleys must be swept aside.)

You’d think this “nothing’s actually permanent” thing would strip comics of their drama somewhat, but it doesn’t seem to. The medium’s still packed with “Wow!” moments, scenes or ideas that knock us off our feet. A quarter century of our favourites follow, but first, a few notes on the list.
