What happened? Comics rarely do those trendy “bad men you have a sneaking regard for” as successfully as
Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad, et al, but here’s one: Skurge the Executioner, Thor bruiser from the early ’60s, redeemed in battle against the forces of Hela in one of the most memorable scenes from the epic Walt Simonson run.
Why was it shocking? Because it’s so easy to believe that there are good and bad characters, and there’s an end to it. The death of Skurge proves they can all be good characters – if handled right.
