The Ultimates 2 #13, February 2007

What happened? At its best, Marvel’s Ultimate Universe told striking, smart, hard-edged re-imaginings of the core Marvel characters and events; at its worst it was a controversy factory, littering its tales with mutilation and rape. So let’s pick one of the line’s gobsmacking moments that didn’t leave a foul taste in the mouth: the awesome eight-page fold-out spread of everybody fighting everybody else in the rain from the shock-happy Mark Millar/Bryan Hitch team.

Why was it shocking? In these decompressed times, comics often pretend to be cable TV shows and forget they can do things other mediums can’t. This spread is pure comics, like your average multiplex screen expanding to IMAX size for a single shot, then retracting again – but better!
