“Now it’s my turn!”
Uncanny X-Men #132, April 1980
What happened? Feisty X-Man Wolverine, not yet the superstar he will become, clambers out of a filthy sewer. Far from dead, he’s about to open a can of whoop-ass on the Hellfire Club – and soon every bad guy in the Marvel U.
Why was it shocking? This was where Wolverine became a star; the era of the “killer hero” had begun, ramming home the violent, noble outsider shtick seemingly required to make an ’80s good guy “cool”.
