Jack Kirby’s mid-’70s return to Marvel is often forgotten by fans, but there’s strong stuff here, not least in The Eternals, a more conventional reworking of “Fourth World” tropes and themes. What made this particular hidden civilisation of modern-day godlings so intriguing was the way it channelled the was-God-a-spaceman? conspiracy theories so popular at the time, thanks to Erich von Däniken’s Chariots Of The Gods. Okay, so hunky blonde Ikaris is a tad dull compared to Orion or Thor, but he’s been around long enough to be mistaken for Noah’s dove, is powered by cosmic energy, communicates with Celestials, and takes his Earth-protecting mission very seriously indeed.
