Captain Marvel

Comic Heroes - - Feature -

The Kree are among the big noises of Cosmic Marvel, but we’ve only really got to know one of them well: Captain Mar-Vell, introduced in the try-out book Marvel Super-Heroes and, briefly, one of the most exciting protagonists in comics.

Mar-Vell was first officer of a Kree ship sent to spy on Earth, but he was soon disobeying orders in order to protect us, using his Kree tech to pose as a superhero down here, and earning cosmic powers from assorted strange, space-dwelling entities. This new incarnation was saved from imminent cancellation by Jim Starlin and, temporarily, it was the most inventive, twisting and shock-packed book Marvel had.

Starlin’s ongoing “Thanos War” storyline was an early Marvel space epic – much imitated, never beaten – packed with dynamic storytelling, shock moments and innovative page layouts.
