Jack Kirby may have created yet more impressive otherworlds later in his career but it all began with Asgard, home of Marvel’s take on the Norse Gods. A gleaming city of wonders, it’s half Medieval or barbarian and half sci-fi spectacular on the corner of a continent floating in space, its link to Earth a Rainbow Bridge you could ride a horse across. Most early Thor adventures were largely Earth-bound, but, with the addition of the much-admired, fairytale-esque “Tales Of Asgard” back-up strips from Journey Into Mystery #97 on, we started to explore this fantastical world, and every new element – from Jotunheim, home of the Frost Giants, to Muspelheim with its Fire Demons – had jaws hitting knees and floors in amazement.
