Mike Carey and Mike Perkins
They made a splash with Doctor Faustus and later SpellBinders. Now they’re working together again on a haunted house story with a twist for Boom. Joel Meadows finds out more...
Talk their annoyingly punctuated Rowans Ruin.
Comic Heroes: The association between the two of you goes back a number of years, to Caliber, is that correct?
Mike Perkins: Yes, Doctor Faustus [in 1997] was the first thing we worked on together…
Mike Carey: And it was already apparent then that there was some kind of a chemistry. Mike was living in Poland and I was amazed at the extent he went to [in order to] get the visual reference right for the architecture on Faustus, going around to medieval sites. So we’ve always come back to work together…
MP: And clicked and got on well together. I think the thing is, and I don’t know if it’s the same for you, but Mike forces me to be better through his scripts. That’s one of the things I love about it…
MC: And what I love about working with Mike is that he’ll just do a rough sketch of a character and I can already see how that character would talk and where they’re coming from. It’s like he creates this perfect stage for storytelling. So again and again we’ve come back into each other’s orbit.
CH: What was the starting point
for Rowans Ruin [sic]?
MC: We talked about how cool it would be to do a creator-owned book or series, and this grew out of that. There were a number of ideas that we talked about.
MP: I think we got together about two years ago in Stratford Upon Avon. Basically we went over a few projects – I’ve had different things in my mind for a while that I just haven’t been able to get around to writing, [because] it’s very difficult to switch from a writing brain to a drawing brain. So I just went to Mike and said: “Okay, these are my ideas, I want you to turn them into something.”
Above: “It isn’t just a haunted house mystery,” Mike Carey reveals. “It’s as much about the two women and their psychology.”
