Neon Wasteland

Comic Heroes - - Feature -

Writer: Robert Shields Artist: Robert Shields Publisher: Self-published

Neon Wasteland is unlike any other title on this list: an interactive web comic and videogame created by multimedia artist Rob Shields. Inspired by some of the most vibrant aspects of ’80s underground culture, it’s Japanese cyberpunk, graffiti and 8-bit videogame all in one.

From the captures and concept art Shields has shared on his website, Neon Wasteland is so colourful you could lick it. His motorcycle gang, beautifully called The Gutter Punks, are also some of the coolest characters on this list, with cybernetic, dreadlocked leader Rabbit and her affinity with French cinema, a robot called Pops, an ice-cream loving youngster called Kid Death and even a kitty with artificial limbs. This is the definition of squad goals.

The comic hasn’t been released yet, but Shields has announced that the first issue and free demo will be launched soon. Check www.robshields.net for more information.

NeonWasteland describes itself as “Putting the punk back in cyberpunk.”
