The Magdalena

Comic Heroes - - Comics We Rate - Will Salmon

This revival of a character from ’90s horror comic The Darkness plays out like a more religious take on Buffy.

Patience is the Magdalena – the latest in a lineage of demon-battling nuns. But after fighting the forces of evil for centuries, her time is nearly up. Enter Maya, a teenage girl who may just be her replacement – if she can survive long enough.

Seeing things through Maya’s eyes is a sensible approach – it’s very easy for newbies to jump on board with this okay opener. The book crams in a lot of setup, but manages to do so in an entertaining fashion – even if Di Bari’s scrappy art and the murky colours don’t mark it out as the most visually appealing book.
