Schools plan big

TWO lo­cal schools have big plans af­ter they re­ceived more than $10 mil­lion in fund­ing in the re­cent State Bud­get.

South­ern River Col­lege ($8.4 mil­lion) and Can­ning Vale Col­lege ($2 mil­lion) both re­ceived fund­ing in the Bud­get.

South­ern River Col­lege prin­ci­pal Everal Mio­ce­vich said the planned ren­o­va­tions would em­pha­sise its fo­cus on sci­ence, tech­nol­ogy, en­gi­neer­ing and math­e­mat­ics (STEM), sport and the arts.

“We’re go­ing to do a com­plete up­grade of our ex­ist­ing sci­ence and ‘stem’ room that will in­clude en­gi­neer­ing class­rooms be­ing es­tab­lished, which will be fan­tas­tic,” she said.

“There will be a new au­di­to­rium space al­low­ing for lec­tures to oc­cur as well and we’ll be con­vert­ing our old gym into a per­form­ing arts area.”

Can­ning Vale Col­lege prin­ci­pal Pe­ter Ru­drum said the fund­ing would en­able it to im­prove stu­dent ser­vices and build more hard sports courts for basketball and net­ball.
