School holiday adventures

ROLEYSTONE Theatre is getting ready to take children on an interactive adventure this school break.

From the tale of a young girl whose bed becomes a sailing ship to a group of children learning they’re all unique like the colours of a rainbow, Storytime in the Hills will whisk kids away from the shores of holiday boredom.

Director Bree Hartley and writer Nicole George are both teachers who live in the area.

“It started in 2012 when Nicole and I really wanted to create something for the local children that was affordable, fun school holiday entertainment. We have children of our own and know it’s hard to find something that fits all of those,” Ms Hartley said.

Tickets are $5 per person, with children aged two and under sitting on an adult’s lap free and fruit snacks served at intermission.

A range of children aged six to 14 perform on stage during Storytime, along with four adults.

Ms Hartley’s children Mackenzie (6) and Cameron Ramsell (9) will tread the boards this holidays, with Cameron taking on the lead role in Kyle’s Rainbow Day.

“It feels really exciting. I also have to remember more lines than other people, which makes me nervous,” Cameron said.

Ms Hartley said it was important to get children involved in theatre, both as audience and participants.

“It gives them a chance to interact live, which you can’t get when you’re watching a movie. You’re missing that live element,” she said.

Storytime in the Hills plays at Roleystone Theatre on Brookton Highway on Monday, October 2, Wednesday, October 4, and Friday, October 6, at 11am and 2pm daily.

Each performance runs about one hour, including intermission.
