THERE is no case of beginner’s luck for Monique Smith and Terry Hughes, who have claimed the Clubman Cup rookie of the year honours.

The dynamic duo has secured the award heading into the final rally of the year after they finished third at the penultimate event in Chidlow, their first podium finish of the year.

Driver Hughes, who lives in Armadale, said they had improved throughout the year and was hopeful of a good result at the Clubman Cup’s final rally in Jarrahdale on November 11.

“We definitely got faster and Monique is calling the notes a lot better,” he said.

“We’re hoping at the end of the year to be in a top five finish overall; we’ll be happy with that.

“We’d like to finish on the podium again but there will be a lot more competitors in Jarrahdale. It’s the final one for the Clubman Cup and also one of the longest events in the season.”

His navigator Smith, from Beckenham, said she enjoyed her rookie year but acknowledged she needed to work on remaining calm in the passenger seat.

“I’ve got to try remain calm. I’ve still got to improve on calling notes but I’m still pretty proud of how I’ve done this year,” she said.
