Mile­stone year for ti­tle-winning club

FRIEND­SHIP has proved to be the vi­tal in­gre­di­ent as Can­ning Vale Cricket Club cel­e­brates its 20th an­niver­sary.

Started by a group of friends, the club has won three premier­ships in two decades, in­clud­ing the Perth Cricket As­so­ci­a­tion Third Grade ti­tle, which led to pro­mo­tion to Sec­ond Grade this sea­son.

Club pres­i­dent Michael Patino said the club was built on friend­ship and spi­ralled from there.

“You get to play with your mates and that’s a big thing, it’s how the club started and evolved over time,” he said.

“We all started as friends, then friends of friends came down and it started a domino ef­fect. Our player base has grown as the sub­urb has grown and the cul­tures and back­grounds of the play­ers are re­flec­tive of the area now.”

As part of its 20th birth­day cel­e­bra­tions, the club is hold­ing a fam­ily fun day and the an­nual Cheney Cup on Novem­ber 19 at Can­ning Vale Oval.

Named af­ter two of the club’s found­ing broth­ers Craig and Glen Cheney, the cup is a Twenty20 game played be­tween the clubs’ past and present mem­bers, which Patino said was al­ways a fun day out.

“It’s a good op­por­tu­nity for past play­ers to come out and meet newer play­ers and get to know them a bit,” he said.

The club has three teams, in­clud­ing sec­ond and fifth grade sides for the com­pet­i­tive play­ers and a one­day side.
