THERE can’t be a Scottish cultural celebration without a pipe band or two.

Next month’s Armadale Highland Gathering will be no exception, with some of WA’s best pipe bands, including current National Grade 1 champions the WA Police Pipe Band, set to converge on Frog Hollow near Minnawarra Park for the event.

The bands will use the event to go head-to-head in a heated competition before uniting at the end of the day for a tribute to their Scottish ties via a massed pipe band procession.

WA Police Pipe Band officer in charge Ian Stewart said each year the 15-member band participated in the event it had gotten “bigger and better” and they were looking forward to returning.

“We always look forward to engaging with the community at Armadale Highland Gathering; the booming sound of bagpipes and drums always help to bring out a very large crowd,” he said.

“For the first part of the competition the band will play various selection of music combined together for between six and seven minutes called MSR (march, strathspey and reel).

“The second part of the competition is called a medley.

“This also must last between six and seven minutes long and is judged on various aspects of that music being played.”

The Perth Kilt Run and Armadale Highland Gathering is on September 9 at Minnawarra Park, Armadale.

Pipe bands will be converging on Armadale for the Highland Gathering.
