Sand mine gets Shire nod

CONDITIONAL approval has been granted for a sand mine in Hopeland off Punrak Road.

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale will forward its approval to the WA Planning Commission.

Bassendean sand will be extracted and supplied to the land development industry within the Shire and around Perth.

Extraction of sand is anticipated to be completed within a five-year period and will be taken from an existing sand ridge that traverses the site in a northsouth direction towards the eastern boundary of the 30ha site.

The Shire raised some concern that the main route for the majority of trips would be to and from Kwinana Freeway via the Hopeland Road and Karnup Road intersection, which is currently considered not safe for semitrailers.

Shire officers recommended conditions so the applicant is required to contribute towards the upgrading of the intersection.

The hours of operation are proposed to be from 7am to 5pm from Monday to Friday and 7am until noon Saturday.
