Abernethy works near
UPGRADES to Abernethy Road in Byford worth $18.6 million will start mid-June and are expected to be complete by late February next year.
The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale awarded a tender for construction at its council meeting on April 28. Funding was secured from the National Stronger Regions Fund and Main Roads WA, with the Shire chipping in $2.75 million.
The Shire awarded the tender for the construction phase to WBHO for the first stage from Kardan Boulevard to Soldiers Road.
Works completed to date on the project include the road design, the design of relocating water and gas mains, the relocation of Telstra infrastructure, and the placement underground of power.
Shire officers have also been liaising with the Public Transport Authority, with a view to receiving required approvals for widening Abernethy Road at the level crossing.
“The completion of this project will also enable council to start looking at the activation of the space on either side of Abernethy Road and down George Street, further enhancing the Byford town centre aesthetic,” Shire president John Erren said.
The Abernethy Road project involves $7200 in Black Spot funding for the upgrade of the Soldiers Road and Abernethy Road intersection following a fatality on Abernethy Road in April.
The Shire will contribute $4800 and the funding will pay for the installation of a median island.
