Abernethy works near

UP­GRADES to Abernethy Road in By­ford worth $18.6 mil­lion will start mid-June and are ex­pected to be com­plete by late Fe­bru­ary next year.

The Shire of Ser­pen­tine Jar­rah­dale awarded a ten­der for con­struc­tion at its coun­cil meet­ing on April 28. Fund­ing was se­cured from the Na­tional Stronger Re­gions Fund and Main Roads WA, with the Shire chip­ping in $2.75 mil­lion.

The Shire awarded the ten­der for the con­struc­tion phase to WBHO for the first stage from Kar­dan Boule­vard to Sol­diers Road.

Works com­pleted to date on the project in­clude the road de­sign, the de­sign of re­lo­cat­ing wa­ter and gas mains, the relocation of Tel­stra in­fra­struc­ture, and the place­ment un­der­ground of power.

Shire of­fi­cers have also been li­ais­ing with the Pub­lic Trans­port Author­ity, with a view to re­ceiv­ing re­quired approvals for widen­ing Abernethy Road at the level cross­ing.

“The com­ple­tion of this project will also en­able coun­cil to start look­ing at the ac­ti­va­tion of the space on ei­ther side of Abernethy Road and down Ge­orge Street, fur­ther en­hanc­ing the By­ford town cen­tre aes­thetic,” Shire pres­i­dent John Er­ren said.

The Abernethy Road project in­volves $7200 in Black Spot fund­ing for the up­grade of the Sol­diers Road and Abernethy Road in­ter­sec­tion fol­low­ing a fa­tal­ity on Abernethy Road in April.

The Shire will con­trib­ute $4800 and the fund­ing will pay for the in­stal­la­tion of a me­dian is­land.
