SINGER LOOKS FORWARD TO LEAD ROLE
THORNLIE resident Mariah Gonzalez is taking to the stage at the end of this month in a local adaptation of the worldwide hit High School Musical.
Directed by Roleystone resident Lys Tickner and Brogan Smirke, the Disney hit tells the story about a popular high school basketball star and a shy, academically gifted newcomer who discover they share a secret passion for singing.
When they sign up together to audition for the lead roles in the school musical, it threatens East High’s rigid social order and sends their peers into an uproar.
Gonzalez said she was looking forward to playing the lead role of the shy, reserved Gabriella Montez.
“She’s a high academic achiever but tries to keep a low profile to save herself from being bullied,” she said.
“I love everything there is about this musical and I feel Gabriella is very much like myself in some ways.”
The Thornlie High School student is already somewhat of an experienced singer, performing with her siblings in vocal group The 3Gs at local retirement villages and the Gosnells Sunday Markets.
“I’ve always been a fan of High School Musical. I was nine when my brother and I performed Bop To The Top, a number from the show, for the Pilbara Music Festival,” she said.
High School Musical plays at the Roleystone Theatre at 8pm June 30, July 7, 14 and 15 and 2pm July 1, 5, 8 and 12.
