INCLUSIVITY was the big winner when Bletchley Park Primary School hosted its inaugural interschool sports carnival for special needs students.

Students with intellectual and physical disabilities from Bletchley Park, Forest Crescent and Piara Waters primary schools came together to compete in a variety of events last Wednesday.

Carnival organiser and Bletchley Park Primary School sports teacher Clint McNerney said it made his day to see every competitor’s enthusiasm.

“The highlight was seeing the kids so engaged, so enthusiastic and really excited, and then coming up and getting their medals, it almost bought a tear to my eye,” he said.

“They’re the students who miss out; they’re the students that don’t get that opportunity because interschool is always based on ability.”

Mr McNerney said he wanted to expand the carnival in the future and involve schools in other districts.

“I’m really looking forward to getting more schools on board next year,” he said.

“That’s the real aim behind the carnival – to make it bigger.

“I’ve had a lot of parents from other associations and suburbs really interested in doing the same sort of concept in their area at their school and that’s what it’s all about, giving other schools the opportunity.”

Rio Games Paralympian Adam Deans also attended the carnival.
